Have you ever wondered how colours are decided upon as this year's "must have" each season? If you imagine a group of people sitting around a table picking ones they like you're not far from the truth.
However it actually is a little bit more complicated than that. The people at Pantone (a corporation that has developed a standardized colour matching system for identifying colours) meet twice a year and have a secret meeting of representatives from various nations' colour standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a colour for the following year.
So, when the decision is made, we are all told of the particular "Colour of the Year". However don't think it's just a fly by night decision. Actually it is based on factors such as how culture expresses the attitudes and emotions of the times we live in. So, for example the Recession and growing environmental awareness in the 1970s brought "earthy colours" like Avocado, Burnt Sienna, Carafe, Harvest Gold, Rust, and Corsair (teal).
Now, for the first time ever for 2016 Pantone chose two! The 2016 colour(s) of the year were recently announced to be “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity”.
Just looking at these two colours sends my mind back to the late 80's and to be honest, filled me with horror! But there are some secrets to remember when using any colour so now is the time to explain!
Frankly, I would be unlikely to use these two colours together unless I was looking at colours for kiddies rooms or small homewares such as note pads, coffee mugs and cushions. I believe the secret in using these two colours well is to use them individually.
If you mix them with bolder colour choices, like sophisticated grays, deep rich browns or even camel they really shine and provide a lovely fresh look for the home. In other words, use them as a highlight colour balanced with cooler tones for the best modern look in 2016.
If you are brave, select one of these colours and paint the entire room, but then you need to furnish and decorate the room in the greys, blues, whites and browns to prevent it looking overpoweringly pink or blue. Copper accessories work really well with Rose Quartz!
If pastels appeal to you then this is your year but if you like the idea of these pretty soft colours, for accents only, simply investing in a few new accessories will bring your room up to date for 2016!

So, will you be repainting or just looking for some new colours in your accessories?
